Exploring Ceramic Surface Decoration with Tile Making

Instructor: Mindy McCormick
Description: Explore the rich history of tile making and ceramic surface decorating techniques in this four evening workshop. We will discuss the handmade tradition of how tiles are produced; make our own tiles; and explore the surface decorating techniques of bas relief (sculpture), incising and inlaying (drawing a picture or pattern onto clay then staining it with washes or underglazes), and sgraffito (carving a design or drawing through an underglaze) to complete a series of interesting focal tiles. Bring a design that you wish to repeat across techniques. Tuition includes all supplies and kiln loading and firing.
