Class

Sculpting the Portrait in Low Relief

Instructor: Lesa Cook
Description: Taking inspiration from the portrait reliefs of Saint-Gaudens, Verrochio, and other Renaissance masters, you will sculpt a portrait in bas (low) relief using a personal photo (in profile view) as your reference. You will learn techniques for creating the illusion of depth in a shallow space, and combine drawing and sculpting to create a shallow relief that can be wall-mounted after firing. Topics explored will include proper use of tools, properties of clay, preparation for firing, and finishing details. Open to all levels, this class is a good introduction to sculpture for someone who has a drawing background. Tuition includes supplies and firing.
