Artobus: The Barnes Foundation

Instructor: Melanie Gettier & Tim Ryan
Description: Join us as we visit the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia! Enjoy an hour-long guided tour of the Barnes Collection with a specially-trained docent. Founded in 1922 by Albert C. Barnes, the Barnes Foundation is holds 4,000 historical objects and over 900 paintings primarily from the Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and Modernist movements. In 2012, the Barnes was relocated from Merion, Pennsylvania to its current home in Philadelphia. Barnes aimed to draw unforeseen similarities between objects and mixed cultures, media, and time periods. The galleries display paintings alongside ordinary household objects; French sculpture next to Navajo textiles. The layout, carefully curated by Barnes beginning in the 1920s, is precisely replicated in the new museum. See works by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and Vincent van Gogh.
