Sculpting the Portrait and Bas-Relief

Description: Learn to sculpt a portrait in ceramic clay! Each student will complete one portrait bust and one small relief sculpture that will be fired and picked up at a later date. Students will work from a live model to learn anatomy of the head, how to judge proportions, and capture gesture and expression. Students will also have the option to work on a shallow (or bas-relief) of a portrait which combines 2D and 3D methods. The class will include demonstrations, presentations, and individual instruction. Topics include proper use of tools, the properties of clay, preparation for firing, and finishing details. Examples of how to repair, finish, and mount a fired piece will also be discussed. Open to all levels. Tuition includes model fee, supplies, and firing.
