Class

Weaving on a Simple Frame Loom

Instructor: Joh Ricci
Description: This 3-day workshop meets Saturday, August 12; Sunday, August 13; & Saturday August 19 from 11:30am - 4:00pm. This workshop will be an introduction to the vocabulary and basic techniques of tapestry weaving using a simple, inexpensive and portable frame loom that you will make and keep! Learn the basics of tapestry weaving using yarns of different thicknesses, colors, and fiber content - to create a woven sampler. Techniques include plain weave, creating columns and shapes, vertical stripes and rya knots. Students will assemble and prep their own simple, portable loom on the first day and begin with plain weave; expand their weaving skills on day 2; and return day 3 to learn how to finish and remove their weaving from the loom, and prep the loom for a future weaving. Each day will include an open discussion with Q&A. A variety of woven items from the instructors collection will be presented to gain insight on the variety of techniques, materials, and expression. Tuition includes some supplies. Students should bring the following: Small household hammer, pen and paper for note taking, any yarn of your own that you would like to use in your sampler, and a clamp-on light if you feel the need for additional light.
