Introduction to Painting the Portrait in Oil

Instructor: Lesa Cook
Description: Learn to paint the portrait in oil! Working from a live model, students will learn to capture form and color. Students will complete a limited palette painting in each class - working quickly to block in large shapes in a wet-into-wet technique, resulting in a fresh and gestural quality. The first class will provide a demonstration, after which students will create several quick study sketches in burnt sienna. The second and consequent classes will introduce white, red, yellow, and black. Students will work on a single painting each class. Tuition includes model fee and some materials. Students should bring the following to the first class: One stretched canvas (11x14 inches); small glass jar; paper towels or cloth rags; smock or apron. Students will need one blank canvas (11x14) for each class session. NOTE: A limited supply of canvases are available for purchase at the Delaplaine ($15 each).
