Visiting Artist Workshop: Mixed Media with Nancy Barch

Instructor: Nancy Barch
Description: This workshop meets Saturday, May 13; Sunday, May 14; and Monday, May 15, 2017 from 10am - 4pm. Expand your creative vocabulary in this popular workshop lead by mixed media artist Nancy Barch. Students will be introduced to new techniques each day - including image transfer, monotype, and wax paper reverse printing - with which to build a stockpile of original source materials and collage elements. Learn how to combine paint, pastels, and printmaking to achieve stunning results in color and texture. Through engaging demos and informative group discussions, students will not only learn how to make innovative tools from ordinary household items - but to improve their work flow while creating compelling compositions. Geared for beginners and experienced collage artists alike. The perfect workshop for painters who are looking to take the leap to mixed media. STUDENTS SHOULD BRING THE FOLLOWING: At least 6 sheets of heavy watercolor paper (140# or 300#) OR 9 or more sheets of hot or cold pressed illustration board (bring any size, quality, and brand, that you prefer); 2-3 colors of acrylic paint (brand and viscosity of your choice); 2-3 colors of acrylic inks; cheap pastels; acrylic gel medium (matte finish preferred); collage elements such as decorative and found papers, bubble wrap, colored tissue paper, used envelopes with security patterned interiors; brayer or roller; Conté crayons (black, brown, or white); short cardboard tubes of varying diameters; aluminum foil and waxed paper roll; water container, medium to large; plastic drywall spatulas of varying widths (also known as taping or joint knives); latex-free gloves; paper towels; sponges (for clean up); plastic to cover your worktable (white or clear recommended); optional: old paintings to rework. FROM THE INSTRUCTOR: The purpose of this workshop is to expand your creative vocabulary. There are so many techniques, materials, and choices to make that we often fall back on the familiar and remain in our comfort zone. Welcome to the world of mixed media where failure is not an option! Pack up your gel medium and come along on an artistic journey. Join me in exploring new techniques with aqueous mediums. Play with the abstraction of known images such as still life and figures. Follow along your artistic path and allow me to show you how to enhance what you already do. You'll find that it's amazing what you can do with a little collage and some imagination. ~Nancy Barch
