The Delaplaine Arts Center is committed to providing an accessible environment for all of our visitors and students. All public areas of the Delaplaine are mobility-device accessible (except motorized scooters). We welcome requests for accommodations for other disability needs such as sensory-friendly times, ASL interpreting for programs, and other needs. Delaplaine at Home & Art Cart Activity

Kids (and adults!) can get creative with two Art Carts and Delaplaine at Home videos, which premier on the 15th of each month. Contribute to a community woven sculpture inspired by El Anatsui. FREE

Art at Night: Artist Jeff Hall
Thursday, May 9 • 7–8 pm

Join sculptor Jeff Hall for a look into his artistic process and history. In addition to stunning commissioned monumental sculptures in Washington DC, Colorado, and Arkansas, Hall’s work is represented by galleries across the United States. McClintock’s Distilling also will be joining us with special minicocktails available for purchase! FREE

Take a self-guided jaunt downtown and visit local galleries! At the Delaplaine, Bonny Sydnor (beach-themed collages, watercolors, illustrations) will be showcasing and selling her work. FREE

Artobus: Bus Trip to the National Museum of Women in the Arts
Friday, Jun 7 • 9 am–5 pm

Join us for a bus trip to Washington, DC, where we’ll spend the day at the National Museum of Women in the Arts! Their newly renovated located is in the heart of Washington, D.C.  The National Museum of Women in the Arts advocates for better representation of women artists and serves as a vital center for thought leadership, community engagement, and social change. Their exhibitions showcase historic and contemporary artwork and their collections feature more than 5,500 works from the 16th century to today created by more than 1,000 artists. Get tickets here.

yART Sale

It’s time for spring cleaning at the Delaplaine, too! Stop by the yART sale for gently used books, miscellaneous art supplies, frames, decor, and other odds and ends. On Saturday, items are priced as tagged. On Sunday, it’s pay-what-you-want for the leftover items. Proceeds benefit educational programs at the Delaplaine. Sorry, we are not accepting donations for the sale.

Thursday, Jul 18 • 7–8 pm

Photographer Michael Hunter Thompson discusses his recent Fade to Blue project, a nostalgic, immersive installation of Allegany High School artifacts, memorabilia, mementos, and parts of the now-demolished 1925 building, accompanied by the over 40 staged interior and exterior photographs Thompson took of generations of alumni and staff. FREE

Art at Noon: Thomas Sterner
Friday, Aug 9 • 12–1 pm

Working in a variety of materials, including steel, wood, paint, and ink, Thomas Sterner aims to make people smile and think. Aside from works created for exhibition in gallery spaces, he has also completed 16 large public sculptures since 2019, including Tree of Life, Water Lily Wave, and Water Lily Swirl, all installed along Carroll Creek in downtown Frederick. This discussion will explore his history and current practice through the lenses of artistic path, process, and purpose. FREE

World Photography Day Cyanotytpe Event
Monday, Aug 19 • Drop-in anytime 3–5 pm

Celebrate World Photography Day by dropping in to create an original work of art using the sun! Cyanotype uses a light-sensitive paper to capture images without a camera and is a fun technique for all ages. Minors must be accompanied by an adult. FREE, while supplies last

BYOS (Bring Your Own Supplies) with Special Guest teevee
Thursday, Aug 29 • 5–8 pm

Adult artists of all mediums are invited to get creative as we immerse ourselves in the mind-bending music of teevee, a Frederick-based shoegaze band, playing live in the art studio. Bring your artistic medium of choice and find some new sonic inspiration for your work! Easels are available. Registration is encouraged. COST $10 ($8 members)

Using Art to Tell a Story: Workshop with Adam Booth and the Clustered Spires Quilt Guild
Thursday, Sep 12 • 5:30–8:30 pm • Ages 16 and up

Storyteller Adam Booth and the Clustered Spires Quilt Guild will lead participants in a one-evening workshop about creating quilted art as a storytelling device, inspired by the quilts in Adam’s performances. Participants will have the opportunity for their work to be used by Adam in his upcoming performance at Sky Stage on Sunday, September 15 at 3 pm. This program is being held in conjunction with a performance by Adam Booth co-sponsored by the Delaplaine and the Frederick Arts Council.

Art at Noon: Catoctin Forest Alliance
Friday, Sep 13 • 12–1 pm

Join us as Reagan Herndon and Rachel Wojnar discuss their history as artists and their upcoming work as Catoctin Forest Alliance (CFA) Artists in Residence (AIR). Since 2010, the CFA AIR program has welcomed more than 30 artists. The artists stay in a historic cabin in Catoctin Mountain Park for one to three weeks and produce art influenced by the mountain setting. After the residency, each each artist donates one piece of the art they created during their stay to the CFA AIR collection. FREE

Alice in Frederickland Gala

This year, instead of going our usual over-the-top for the Delaplaine’s annual gala, we’re going through the looking glass! Join us to celebrate another year of bringing the visual arts to the Frederick region and to raise funds to provide arts access and opportunities for all in the community. BIG INK Special Workshop Event
Saturday & Sunday, Oct 5 & 6, 2024

Join BIG INK at The Delaplaine Arts Center for a relief printmaking workshop of epic proportions! Learn how to carve a woodblock under Lyell Castonguay, BIG INK’s co-founder. Then, print your carving on a custom-built giant printing press. Individuals of all skill levels are encouraged to register.
