Symposium – Techne: Art and the Emergence of AI

FRIDAY, MAR 7, 2024 • 8 AM–3 PM

Art and technology have always crossed paths and kept pace with one another. Join us for a day-long program exploring current concerns and benefits of the emergence of artificial intelligence and its intersection with the art world. Scholars on the front lines of the engagement of art and technology will present a wide range of topics including effects on our art historical perspective, how AI is transforming museum and gallery experiences, the history of art’s interaction with technology, and more.

Symposium presenters:

  • Clement Akpang, Assistant Professor of Art History at the Corcoran School of the Arts & Design at George Washington University, will discuss the considerations and possibilities that AI affords in minimizing the decontextualization that is prevalent in museums exhibiting Indigenous art and material culture.
  • Alexa Alice Joubin is Professor of English, Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Theatre, International Affairs, and East Asian Languages and Cultures, and Co-Director of the Digital Humanities Institute at George Washington College. She will discuss how technology has always been met by a general skepticism and how artists have been leaders in pushing the boundaries of that skepticism toward a more widespread acceptance of technological advancement.
  • James Morgan is an artist, educator, and researcher, as well as Lecturer at the CADRE (Computers in Art, Design, Research, and Education) Laboratory for New Media at San José State University, CA. He will discuss his role with New Media and his exploratory research utilizing AI.
  • Matthew Westerby, Digital Research Officer at the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts at the National Gallery of Art, will discuss the ways the integration of machine learning and database possibilities with AI is helping to fill the gaps in our understanding of art history.
