HELEN SMITH FREE WORKSHOPS FOR KIDS

The Delaplaine offers free workshops that explore various artists and art techniques throughout history. These workshops are a part of our Community Outreach Initiative and are made possible through donations from the Helen L. Smith Scholarship Fund for Children and the Arts at the Community Foundation of Frederick County. Helen Smith Free Workshops for Kids are held on most first Saturdays, 1–3 pm.

Preregistration is required. The registration request form is available below, beginning at noon on Tuesday two weeks prior to each workshop. Submitting a registration request form is not a guarantee of enrollment; you will receive email confirmation (or regrets) based on availability. Preference is given to first-time participants.

  • Parents are welcome to visit the galleries while the workshops are in session.

Curious Crawling Caterpillar (Ages 6-8)

Embroidered Felt Patches (Ages 9-12)

Create fun, custom patches using hand embroidery and felt! Learn essential stitches to creating fun, graphic designs that make a perfect addition to backpacks, jeans, jackets, and more.

Collaborative Drawing Games

Play a variety of collaborative drawing games that lead to unexpected results! Work with other students as you play and draw unpredictable creations!

Ages 6 to 8 – 1:00 to 2:30 pm

Fabric Pins (Ages 6-8)

Clustered Spires Quilt Guild

Using felt, ribbon, and other materials, learn a simple running stitch to create a fabric pin or brooch in the shape of a bunny or cloud! This easy beginner project will introduce children to basic sewing skills as well as embellishment.

Fuzzy Needle-Felted Friends (Ages 9-12)

Explore sculpting with wool! Needle felting is a process which transforms wool fibers by interlocking and condensing them to create 2D or 3D works of art! We will be working with colorful wool and felting needles as we learn and practice techniques to create a fuzzy felted friend.
