In this beginner friendly oil painting class, explore how to paint a portrait and capture a true likeness. Learn about the anatomy of the head, expressive mark-making, and color theory to bring your subject to life.

Please bring the following materials to class:

  • Stretched canvas: 18×24
  • Recommended paints:
    • Alizarin crimson
    • Cadmium red medium
    • Cadmium orange
    • Hansa yellow light
    • Phthalo green
    • Phthalo blue
    • Ultramarine blue
    • Ivory black
    • Titanium white
    • Dioxazine purple
    • Quinacridone magenta
  • Linseed oil
  • Ivory soap
  • Gamsol
  • Brushes:
    • Assortment of synthetic hog hair filbert brushes: sizes 4–12
    • Assortment of synthetic mongoose filbert brushes: sizes 0–10
    • Filbert grainer: sizes 3/4-inch and 1/2-inch)
    • Synthetic sable oval mop: 1/2-inch and 1/4-inch)
  • Palette knife
  • Silicoil brush cleaning tank
  • Posh glass table top palette: 12×16, gray
  • Portrait photo reference, either on a tablet or laptop or a high-quality print at least 6×8 – Make sure the reference photo’s aspect ratio is 3:4 to match the porportions of the canvas.
  • Masterson Sta-Wet palette seal
