SUMMARY:Contemporary Innovations: James Gardner – Of Verses\, Vines\, and Venerators
DESCRIPTION:Mixed media \nA collection of recent work by Montreal artist James Gardner\, this exhibition continues his task of reinterpreting religious imagery through the lens of Western esotericism. Looking to the iconography of martyrdoms and the depictions of saints\, Gardner’s recent work traces the historical iterations and mutations of these images while attempting to link their symbolism with myth and personal resonances. Through the activity of painting\, common or even mundane images continually evolve to help in processes that reclaim the “symbolic imaginal” and animate new forms of knowledge and experience. \nJames will discuss his history as an artist and teacher and the work in his exhibition at the Oct 3 Art Matters Artist Talk.

SUMMARY:Rhonda Smith – Persistence
DESCRIPTION:Linoleum prints \nCutting these images of the historic farmland of Antietam National Battlefield is the artist’s way of cultivating a fertile line of remembrance to forge a memory of place. Places hold the history of what came before only as long as we care to acknowledge the power of place within our national discourse. Acknowledging the past is the only way to fully embrace “all men are created equal” as a national identity and destiny. \nRhonda will discuss the work in this exhibition at the Sep 5 Art Matters Artist Talk.

SUMMARY:Calligraphy: Gothicized Italic
DESCRIPTION:This rich\, dense lettering has the texture of formal Blackletter styles\, but has more in common with the branching of the Italic hand. However\, it is very different from the Italic writing of the classical Renaissance of 15th Century Italy as it is more lively and has an almost contemporary feel with the pointed O. It can be beautiful and expressive for poems or quotations that suit this pointed arch which reminds us of the upward thrust of Gothic architecture. \nPlease bring the following materials to class: \n\nSpeedball C-Series basic calligraphy set with pen and nibs C2 and C3\n\nEstimated maximum cost: $15
