DESCRIPTION:Associate Curator Yuri Stone will present on four recent installations of work by Felix Gonzalez-Torres at Glenstone Museum. One of the most significant artists to emerge out of New York City in the late 1980s and early 1990s\, Gonzalez-Torres is best known for using everyday materials to evocatively express both the personal and the political. The Cuban-born American artist transformed lightbulbs\, clocks\, and candies into refined\, at times participatory\, sculptures that reflect themes of partnership\, love\, loss\, and intimacy. \nFREE

SUMMARY:Art at Noon: Performing Femininity: Cindy Sherman and Korean Feminist Art
DESCRIPTION:Lecturer at George Washington University\, Jung-Sil Lee Ph.D.\, examines how women artists have challenged conventional representations of femininity by treating gender not as a fixed identity\, but as something constructed\, performed\, and continually negotiated through images\, bodies\, cultural expectations\, and social power. In this talk\, Dr. Lee will explore how Cindy Sherman’s use of photography\, disguise\, costume\, gesture\, and staged personas to expose the artificiality of stereotypical female identities in Western visual culture and then place Sherman in dialogue with Korean feminist art\, which has confronted different but interconnected systems of gender representation shaped by Confucian patriarchy\, colonial modernity\, rapid industrialization\, nationalism\, mass media\, and contemporary consumer culture. \nFREE

SUMMARY:Art at Night: Reading Pictures\, Telling Visual Stories
DESCRIPTION:Mark Wheatley has been telling stories in comic books\, graphic novels\, illustrated books\, TV shows\, and more for decades\, and his career has ranged widely across illustration\, comics\, design\, and film. An inductee into the Overstreet Comic Book Hall of Fame\, Wheatley is the recipient of numerous honors including the Inkpot\, Eisner\, Mucker\, Golden Lion\, Gem\, Pulp Factory\, Robert E. Howard Foundation\, and Speakeasy awards. His work has been exhibited and discussed at institutions including the Library of Congress and the Norman Rockwell Museum. Mark will describe condensing story into single images using example pen and ink illustrations from several of his recent books from Robert E. Howard\, Edgar Rice Burroughs\, and G. D.
