SUMMARY:Contemporary Innovations: James Gardner – Of Verses\, Vines\, and Venerators
DESCRIPTION:Mixed media \nA collection of recent work by Montreal artist James Gardner\, this exhibition continues his task of reinterpreting religious imagery through the lens of Western esotericism. Looking to the iconography of martyrdoms and the depictions of saints\, Gardner’s recent work traces the historical iterations and mutations of these images while attempting to link their symbolism with myth and personal resonances. Through the activity of painting\, common or even mundane images continually evolve to help in processes that reclaim the “symbolic imaginal” and animate new forms of knowledge and experience. \nJames will discuss his history as an artist and teacher and the work in his exhibition at the Oct 3 Art Matters Artist Talk.

Previous painting experience required. \nPlease bring the following materials to class: \n\nExamples of your work (if applicable)\nReady-made stretch canvas – any size\nPaper – Rives BFK or other 150# paper\nAssortment of acrylic paints – Liquitex or Winsor & Newton recommended\nAssortment of brushes with stiffer bristles\, some flats and rounds\, including:\n\nSponge brush\n2- to 3-inch flat brush – something inexpensive\, like a gesso brush\n\n\n2 palette knives\n2-inch wide masking tape (not colored tape or blue painters tape)\nCloth rags\nRoll of paper towels\nStudents who wish to work on full-sized drawing paper should also bring a 22×30 support board to class. SUMMARY:Advanced Ceramics Studio
DESCRIPTION:Independently refine ceramics skills and bring your personal visions to life in a supportive open studio environment. Students are encouraged to bring in ideas for projects and will receive as much or as little assistance as needed. Each class\, there will be a demo highlighting a specific technique to be applied to new projects. Tuition includes up to 25 lbs. of clay; access to tools\, pottery wheels\, and glazes; as well as firing of completed work. \nPrerequisite: wheel throwing classes\, knowledge of cone 6 clay\, and understanding of glazes and glaze application. \nPlease note: \n\nStudio tools will be available for your use\, but you are welcome to bring your own.\nPlease plan to have your work completed and ready for glaze firing by the end of the course. Delaplaine staff will contact you to pick up your finished pieces after they have been fired.\nThe studio is not available to students outside of class time.

Join our high school art club! Club members will create artwork\, hear from professional artists\, and curate a group exhibition of their work. Open to public\, private\, and homeschooled students in grades 9–12. \n2nd and 4th Thursdays\, Sep–May; no club meetings on Nov 26 (Thanksgiving)\, Dec 24 (FCPS winter break)\, or Mar 25 (FCPS spring break). \nClub members will be added to a Google Group\, where important messages and information will be shared. Please make sure to provide the student’s email address in the attendee information section at registration.
