Variations on Linocut Printmaking

Instructor: Brian Reed
Description: This workshop will introduce students to the history of woodblock and linocut printmaking through sharing historical and contemporary works as examples of the possibilities this medium allows. Drawing on techniques and practices used in his works (on exhibit at the Delaplaine in April), artist Brian Michael Reed will walk students through an easy, step by step project that not only teaches traditional linocut practices, but specifically aims to expand techniques suited for the home studio. Students will examine structures within nature such as wings of insects or deconstruct the complexity of leaves as a reference to create a design that will be carved into soft rubber blocks, inked with brayers, and used like a stamp. No prior printmaking experience required. Open to students age 14 to adult. Students age 10–13 may enroll with a registered adult.
