Introduction to Basket Weaving: Melon Basket

Instructor: Joh Ricci
Description: This workshop meets Saturday, October 13 and Sunday, October 14 from 11:30am-4:30pm. For thousands of years, baskets served as useful containers. Today, they're typically used as decoration. This workshop will address the foundational skills in traditional, rib-constructed basketry that yields strong and beautiful, round-bottom baskets. Students will learn how to properly secure the hand and rim hoops by lashing them together to form an 'eye' on each end of the basket. Students will carve and insert ribs to build a framework on which plain weaving is done in an over-one-under-one pattern. Tuition includes basket supplies. Students should bring the following SUPPLIES: Garden snippers (if you have them); an awl or knitting needle; and a measuring tape. Students should bring snacks, beverages and a bag lunch - or enjoy eateries within walking distance. There is no set time for lunch. Please wear clothing appropriate for working with reed in containers of water.
