Forging and Etching: Earrings, Pendants, and Rings

Description: Learn the elasticity and properties of metal, and how to use your forging and etching skills to create projects geared for intermediate and advanced students. Students will complete the following projects: Forged Earrings; Forged Ring; and 2-Color Bi-metal Etched Pendant & Earring Set. Through in-class demos, students will learn to shape, form, solder with an oxy/propane torch, and etch to add texture and depth to their jewelry pieces. Students should bring the following SUPPLIES: Project 1: Forged Earrings: 6 inches of 10ga sterling silver round wire (Rio #100310). Optional stones and settings to be discussed first class. Project 2: Forged Ring: 12 inches of 10ga sterling silver round wire (Rio #100310). Optional stones and settings (suggested Rio #616788, 8mm round and cabochon to catch setting). Project 3: 2-Color Bi-metal Etched Pendant & Earring Set: enamel paint pen (black or blue), (1) 3x3in sheet 1/10 silver-filled double-clad 18ga (Rio #105405), 24 inches of 16ga sterling silver round wire (Rio #100316). Approximate cost $75. Students enrolled in jewelry classes must be 17 or older. REQUIRED: Signed studio waiver (provided in class), safety glasses, earplugs, and ventilated respirator (3M #8515 recommended).
