Class

Coptic to Coil Binding and the Poetry of Pastepapers

Instructor: Johnny Carerra
Description: THIS CLASS IS NOW CLOSED. In this two-day class meets Saturday, Feb. 25 and Sunday, Feb 26. from 1-4pm. Students will make traditional and original paste papers that will be used as covers for a blank Coptic book that can be used as a journal or sketchbook. Additional paste papers will become visual seed for a poetic Artist’s Book that we will make on Sunday. The Coptic Binding is the oldest western binding. It is popular as a non-adhesive structure, as the pages lay flat and the exposed sewing makes a decorative herringbone pattern. Students will learn a traditional technique to fold down sections from a parent sheet; how to trim sections using a small guillotine; and how to use a coil binder. No experience necessary. Tuition includes all supplies.
